On April 5, 2008 the HISD JROTC department conducted the 2008
Outstanding Cadet Selection Board, the most comprehensive of the
various competitions hosted by the JROTC Department.
The districts’ Annual Outstanding Cadet Selection Board competition
allows the top cadet in the 9th through 12th grades from each of the 25
high school JROTC programs (100 cadets) to vie for the honor of holding
the highest positions in the cadet corps for their year groups.
Board members evaluating this year’s competition consisted of HISD
JROTC Instructors from middle school Leadership Citizenship
Development Corps programs and selected cadets from Texas A & M
University and the University of Houston. Prior to arrival at the board,
cadets received points based upon a review of their grade point average;
leadership in academic, student government, and community service
organizations; and participation in extra-curricular activities. At the
competition, cadets were awarded points for their proficiency on a general
knowledge test, an oral presentation, various practical examinations
covering first aid and geography, a personal evaluation, and proper wear
of the cadet uniform.
